adidas Running Shoe Guide: Adizero vs Supernova vs Adistar vs Ultraboost

With so many options of running shoes which one is for me? Let’s take a look - Buying running shoes isn’t as straightforward as it used to be. These days, you’ll hear about stack heights, foam densities, heel-to-toe drops, carbon plates, carbon rods…and it’s easy to think: “Why does this matter? I just want a good pair of running shoes.” At adidas, we simplify the running shoe landscape into four key franchises, each with a specific purpose. Because not all runs are equal and neither are all runners. Some days you want comfort, other days stability, and sometimes you want pure speed. No matter where you are in your journey, there’s a franchise designed to support you. Let’s break it down. The 4 adidas Running Franchises 1. ADIZERO – Lightest. Fastest. 2. SUPERNOVA – Comfort & Supportive daily trainers 3. ADISTAR – Supreme max cushioning 4. ULTRABOOST – The perfect blend of energy, comfort & style Now let’s take a closer look at what each one offers. ADIZERO: Built for Speed Speed is the name of the game. The Adizero franchise is engineered with our lightest materials, most advanced foams, and performance-driven structures. It’s split into two categories: Race to Win If you want the fastest or lightest shoe we make, start here. What defines Race to Win models? Premium lightweight foams Ultra-light uppers Carbon-infused EnergyRods for maximum energy return Designed for race day performance Think of these as your PB‑chasers: built for efficiency, propulsion, and speed. Styles include, Adios Pro Evo , Adios Pro 4 , Takumi 11 , Adios 9. Train to Race These shoes help you prepare for race day without going “all in” on race-day stiffness. Train to Race shoes offer: Light and responsive ride Snappy feel More forgiving than carbon-stiff race models Ideal for tempo, interval, and speed sessions Perfect when you want speed—but not the rigidity of a full race shoe. Styles include, Boston 13 , Adizero SL2 , Duramo Speed, Duramo SL, Prime X 3 , Evo SL ATR , Evo SL SUPERNOVA: Your Everyday Trainer Supernova models are your daily comfort specialists. They’re perfect for new runners, walkers, or anyone prioritising cushioning and support. What sets Supernova apart? Plush cushioning Softer, more forgiving foams Premium heel pillow More padding at every touch point This is the foundation of most running rotations, reliable, comfortable, and built for everyday wear. Styles include the Rise, Solution , Ease, Glide. ADISTAR: Max Cushion for Long Miles When your legs are beat up or the run is getting long, Adistar steps in. What Adistar delivers: Maximum cushioning Smooth rocker geometry Guided, stable transitions Designed for long distances and recovery days If comfort and protection are your top priorities, this is your go‑to. ULTRABOOST: Energy + Comfort + Style Ultraboost is the happy medium of the adidas lineup, balancing cushioning, energy return, durability, and style. What makes Ultraboost special? BOOST midsole: high energy return + long-lasting durability Adaptive primeknit upper for a sock-like feel Cushioned and responsive ride Works for running and lifestyle wear Take the Ultraboost 5 for example: Energy return close to Adizero Stack height not far off the Adistar Comfort on par with Supernova It’s the best of all worlds. More Deep Dives Coming Soon If you found this helpful, stay tuned, we’ll be taking a deeper look into each franchise to help you choose the perfect shoe for every run. TIPS FOR EVERY STAGE OF THE CITY2SURF

Over 80,000 people are taking on the City2Surf challenge in 2024. This year, it’s your turn to dominate the streets of the world’s largest fun run. A challenging course coupled with spectacular views – City2Surf is made for greatness. Ready to find out what completing it feels like? Once you’ve made your way to the start, here’s how you squeeze the most out of every kilometre: PRE RACE PREP Rain, hail or shine, the race will go on, and what you wear for those 14km can define your entire experience. With the unpredictable Sydney weather, the key is having lightweight tech layers that can come off before the race, or during, and be packed or transported easily while you run. Here are our top recommended items for this year’s City2Surf: Adizero SL2 Running Shoes - recommendation for training Adizero Adios Pro 3 Running shoes – Josh Monseur’s favourite for race day Own the Run short-sleeve tees Own the Run long-sleeve tees High support sports bra Own the Run shorts Running vest, shell or jacket reathable, lightweight running socks Adizero lightweight running cap Water bottle for race-day hydration and electrolytes Start – The APPREHENSION You’re geared up in the latest and greatest adidas running kit. Whether you’re running for the first time in your first pair of SL2’s, going for your PB in the adidas Adizero Boston 12’s, or trying to reach the podium in the adizero adios Pro 3’s, you’re ready to hit the streets. Double-check to ensure your watch and ensure your adidas running app is ready. STAGE 2 – THE CROWD Here, the race begins and the masses of participants converge down William Street. You didn’t make a race plan for nothing. Relax, find your rhythm and try not to fall for the temptation of speeding up in this slight downhill section. Stay calm and controlled as you head up through the Kings Cross Tunnel. STAGE 2 – THE RHYTHM As you wind around New South Head Road and admire the views of Rose Bay, capture this moment for the memory books by stopping at our adidas photo frame for a quick snap. Get pumped up as you pound the pavement to the beats of the DJ as you head towards the most challenging part of the course. Find a smooth stride on this long, flat stretch. Keep hydrating and fuel up when possible. STAGE 3 – THE HIGHLIGHT City2Surf wouldn’t be the same without Heartbreak Hill. Find your inner strength as you push up the steep incline, picking up some extra energy from the cheering local crowds as you soak in those breathtaking views of Sydney Harbour when you reach the top. You’re officially halfway! STAGE 4 - The TEST Regather your breath as you turn the corner at Vaucluse onto Old South Head Road, then Military Road, and down the hill as you take in those magnificent ocean views before completing the turnaround at Curlewis Street. Grab another water and fuel up for the final stretch. STAGE 5 – The STILLNESS You’re almost there as you round the bend overlooking world-famous Bondi Beach. Make sure to keep your strides steady while admiring the iconic site as you approach the finish line. FINISH LINE – THE ACHIEVEMENT Your body can do a lot more than your mind gives it credit for. One last sprint down Queen Elizabeth Drive Street, and you’ve made it. That’s all it takes and you’ve ticked the City2Surf off your bucket list. Give yourself a pat on the back – what an achievement! Best of luck this year – YOU GOT THIS.
